This beautiful coin was minted in 1981, when the Lire was still the official currency of Italy. It was minted in honor of a celebration of agriculture and in coordination with the U.N. Agriculture is intrinsic to Italian heritage. It is the basis of so many of the things we love and always think of when we think of Italy. We think of the wine, the evening out at our favorite restaurant on a beautiful street in Rome, or a time we were invited to be part of a home cooked meal in Florence with home made pasta, fresh bruschetta and bread that melts in your mouth. Food is the basis for so many of our best times and best memories that we treasure forever. These are all things that are synonymous with agriculture in Italy. But this coin also looks to the importance of agriculture the world over. It is the basis of health, the basis of life and we could not exist without it.

This Lire is a piece of Italy, a piece of history and was legal tender before Italy became part of the EU. I love that it is a time capsule that can never be made again and I love that it represents so much of what I will always love about Italy.

The front of the coin is a woman with a cornucopia, (Horn of Plenty) and on the back is the Villa Lubin, the former headquarters of the International Agricultural Institute.
